Open the bottom of your new leather sheath to insert the axe from the handle to the head.
If you find the leather to be tight at first, then run under warm water and work the hatchet head into the sheath in order to stretch the sheath to fit the head of the hatchet. This may take several tries, but we've found it to be rather efficient in our own methods.
